Rare visit to hypermarket for seniors from homes

What say you on the issue below?

FOR more than an hour recently, the shopping aisles at Giant Hypermarket Shah Alam were filled with the banter and laughter of 35 senior citizens as they explored the huge offerings on the shelves.

For most of these senior citizens, it was their first time stepping into a hypermarket.

The special shopping trip was arranged by Giant Malaysia in conjunction with Senior Citizens’ Day which was fell in October.

Fifteen of Giant’s employees accompanied the seniors and helped them pick up what they wanted.

The seniors, aged between 55 and 86, most of whom had no immediate family members, were from the Rumah Orang Tua Kampung Seri Setia and the Lovely Nursing Home in Kelana Jaya.

They each received RM100 vouchers to spend as they like. They also took home a goodie bag filled with an assortment of daily essentials and an umbrella each.

It was no surprise that most of them picked up new clothes and shoes for the upcoming festive celebrations, food and beverage and daily essentials and personal items such as shampoo and toothpaste.

Giant marketing director Ho Mun Hao said: “The company had in the past contributed in cash and kind to homes for senior citizens. We realise that while the contribution in cash and kind was good, what the senior citizens really needed was emotional care and support.”

“Thus, we decided to organise a shopping trip to one of our stores for them and for our staff to spend time talking to them, helping them shop and eating with them,” he added.
