KUCHING: The state Environment and Public Health Ministry will consider conducting a campaign to curb alcoholism in Sarawak.
Its minister, Datuk Wong Soon Koh, told the State Assembly that such a campaign could be carried out in co-operation with social organisations.
“We will look into it. It could be similar to the way the anti-smoking campaign is done,” he said during question time.
He was responding to a suggestion by Chiew Chiu Sing (DAP – Kidurong) that awareness campaigns be held to reduce the consumption of alcohol.
Earlier, Wong told Roland Sagah (BN – Tarat) that Sarawak recorded 87 admissions for alcohol-related illnesses last year and 27 from January to June this year.
He said there were no fatalities due to alcoholism, adding that there was currently no specific institution for the rehabilitation of alcoholics in Sarawak.
“However, these patients are advised to consult psychiatrists at various government hospitals,” he said.
