KUCHING: Sarawak has asked the Federal Government for funds to set up more checkpoints and beef up manpower to monitor smuggling activities along its borders with neighbouring countries.
Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri Dr George Chan Hong Nam said it was a challenging task for the police to ensure there were no illegal entries along the state’s more than 1,000km long border.
“There are many Jalan Tikus (illegal entry routes),” he told Datuk Wan Abdul Wahab Wan Sanusi (BN – Sadong Jaya) during question time.
State Environment and Public Health Minister Datuk Wong Soon Koh said the Sarawak General Hospital had been equipped to diagnose the A(H1N1) flu. “The equipment can test up to 30 samples a day,” he said.
Wong said five people had died of the flu and 716 confirmed cases had been reported in the state since the outbreak several months ago.
