Deva Gang leader shot dead

GEORGE TOWN: A man believed to be a leader of the notorious Deva Gang was shot dead in a shootout with the police in busy Weld Quay here.

The 37-year-old, who was believed to be planning a kidnap in Penang with other gang members, was trailed by police in an unmarked car before the shooting.

Penang police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Wira Ayub Yaakob said a team of policemen from here and Bukit Aman had followed his car from Bukit Jambul.

“They tailed him on the Jelutong Expressway and intercepted his car near the Gat Lebuh Noordin flats.

“The man fired shots at the police and we shot back,” DCP Ayub told pressmen at the scene of the shooting yesterday.

Police recovered a SK-9mm pistol in the car with a bullet and a magazine with five rounds.

“A syabu-inhaling tool containing some liquid and a police baseball cap were also found in the car,” he said.

DCP Ayub added that police also found a Singapore identity card. It is believed to be fake.

The Deva Gang, believed to be involved in many multi-million heists, is notorious in the Klang Valley and a few other states.
