Councillors and reps to be told before demolition

What say you on the issue below?

ALL the local authorities have been directed not to demolish illegal stalls without the consent of their respective councillors and state assemblymen.

Selangor local government committee chairman Ronnie Liu said it was not proper for such action to be taken without the knowledge of the local representatives.

Notices and warnings should also be issued to the affected traders, he said.

“We do not want the local authorities to carry out demolition at their whim and fancy,” he said in his reply to a question from Kota Damansara assemblyman (PR) Dr Mohd Nasir Hashim.

At this point, Nasir interupted and told the State exco member that there had been cases of demolition being carried out without the knowledge of the councillors and assemblyman.

Nasir said the state must be strict so that certain officials of the local authorities did not abuse their authority and tar the image of the Pakatan Government.

In view of the current unhealthy economic climate, Liu also informed the sitting that the local authorities had also been directed to be lenient in issuing trading licences to food business operators.

He said the state encouraged the local authorities to issue temporary licences to applicants to enable them to earn a living during the current hard times.

“We have to give support, in whatever small way we can to the people in their efforts to earn a living,’’ he added.
