THE Kuala Lumpur Amateur Volleyball Association (Klava) are expecting 48 teams for the Ayam A1 Kuala Lumpur Youth Volleyball championships at the Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) Indoor Sports Centre in Kuala Lumpur from Oct 31 to Nov 4.

There are two age groups for the championships — Under-14 and Under-16 — for both boys and girls.

Klava president Jimmy Yeoh said they were organising the championships for the second year.

“We have the Federal Territories Schools Sports Council (FTSSC) supporting the tournament while Ayam A1 are the sponsors for the second season. Last year, we had the Under-14 and Under-16 age groups separately.

“But this year we have decided to stage both the events at the same time,’’ said Yeoh after a sponsorship presentation ceremony.

The five-day championships is also supported by Molten. Yeoh said about 40 teams have confirmed their participation.

“We expect another eight teams to register witin the next few days,’’ he added.

The championships will also serve as a platform for Klava to select talented players for the national Under-14 and Under-16 championships.

Selected players will be included in the Klava elite squad for special training programme.

Ayam A1 marketing manager James Ng said they were happy with Klava’s commitment towards the promotion of volleyball at grassroots level.

“We were impressed with their set-up. We want to support their programmes,’’ said Ng.

Besides prizes for the top four teams in each category, there will be individual prizes for the Most Valuable Player, Best Spiker, Best Blocker, Best Receiver, Best Server and Best Setter.
