EXCITED laughter and screams filled the air when underprivileged children gathered at the Penang Sports Club (PSC) for a party to celebrate Universal Children’s Day.
Organising chairman Lawrence Cheah said the event was held by the club for the first time for more than 1,000 children and guests.
“We have extended the invitation to more than 40 orphanages and homes in the state, as it is part of our social responsibility programme for society.
“The event is held in October as this is the month to celebrate childhood and promote the welfare of children,” he said at the club.
Children were kept entertained with various fun-filled activities such as telematches, games and a cultural dance by children clad in colourful traditional costumes.
Nuru Nayeem Zaid, 10, from House of Hope said this was the first time she joined in the celebrations for Universal Children’s Day.
“I had a great time participating in telematches with my close friends, and even won one of the top three prizes,” she said.
Federation School for the Deaf welfare teacher Lim Yit Bin said the event provided an opportunity for the children to be exposed to various activities.
“The children can mingle around and join the telematches to instil teamwork, cooperation and coordination,” said Lim.
Yang di-Pertua Negri Tun Abdul Rahman Abbas graced the event.
