FILM industry veteran Tan Sri Dr L. Krishnan believes that festive occasions like Deepavali is a time for sharing and caring with the less fortunate, which is his motivation for hosting his annual celebration.

“My Deepavali celebration has always been for the underprivileged — the handicapped, senior citizens, orphans, single mothers, individuals with visual and hearing impairments, and more,” said Krishnan, who hosts the yearly event with his wife Puan Sri Rukhmanee.

“The first event I hosted had about 50 underprivileged guests; that has grown to some 1,200 guests today.

“I believe that all of humankind should be equally fed, so I hope to spread some love and joy by feeding the underprivileged today,” he said.

A good deed: Krishnan and his wife Rukhmanee giving out ang pow to the disabled guests.

The octogenarian also attributed his kind and generous spirit as the secret to keeping him young.

The 32nd anniversary of Krishnan’s Deepavali celebration featured about 1,200 underprivileged people from 31 welfare homes.

In addition, a cake-cutting ceremony was held to mark the 89th birthday of the philanthropist who is also known as the Father of Malay Films.

The entertainment line-up at the celebration featured performances by the children and individuals from various welfare homes.

The guests were later treated to packed lunch, ice-cream and free flow of chilled Milo and Nescafe beverages.

Krishnan and Rukhmanee later presented hampers to representatives of the welfare homes, and ang pow to all the underprivileged guests.

Adorable siblings Ho Yik Lum, five, and Ho Hui Yee, four, captivated the hearts of the audience during their performance alongside their friends from Ti-Ratana Welfare Society.

Ti-Ratana senior public relations and event executive Christine Alphonse said the two children enjoyed dancing, and had been performing at various events since they were aged three and two.

Gopeenthiran, 11, also stole the spotlight with his hip hop routine during another performance by the children from Ti-Ratana.

“I love dancing because it’s fun!” said the Year Five pupil from SK Desa Petaling.

The self-taught dancer cites Michael Jackson and Jay Chou as his dancing and singing idols respectively.
