MENTRI Besar Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir showed the lighter side of himself when he returned to his hometown in Pulau Pangkor recently.
Besides looking into problems faced by the rakyat on the island, Dr Zambry, who spent a day there, took the time to visit his old friends and constituents.
Dr Zambry’s former employer Ko Pit Sing, 69, said the Mentri Besar would visit his fishing platform whenever he was on the island.
“He was my employee more than 20 years ago, and we loved him as he was a hardworking boy,” he said.
“He never complained about the hard work that he had to do,” he said, adding that it never occurred to him then that Dr Zambry would one day be Perak’s Mentri Besar.
During his visit to the platform, Dr Zambry bought freshly caught fishes intended for his lunch later.
Despite the afternoon heat Dr Zambry continued with his visit, which was occasionally interrupted by rakyat wanting to take pictures with him.
Later in the afternoon, he visited the Malay community in Sungai Pinang Besar.
His visit was akin to visiting relatives as all villagers welcomed the local boy into their homes.
A grandmother Samsiah Mad Lara, 80, said she had known Dr Zambry since he was a young boy.
“He often came to my house to play and now, despite his busy schedule, he still visits me to find out how I am,” she said.
“All of us love him as he is a representative who keeps his promises,” she added.
Before ending his whirlwind tour of the island, Dr Zambry also visited several houses that needed allocations for repairs.
