THE Pure Lotus Hospice of Compassion on Jalan Utama, Penang, is seeking funds to repair a section of its perimeter wall which crumbled during a downpour.
Its chairman Venerable Lyan Shih, 71, said the 5m-long section fell when the heavy flow of water eroded the riverbank on which it was built.
“We estimate the cost of rebuilding the wall to be between RM20,000 and RM30,000,” she said.
She added that no one was injured in the incident which happened on the night of Oct 18.
Ven Lyan Shih, who established the hospice in 2001 to provide in-patient care and emotional support for the poor with terminal cancer, added that the hospice relied on public donations for its daily operating expenses.
The hospice provides service without charge and it now has 16 residents.
Ven Lyan Shih thanked state Agriculture, Agro-based Industry, Rural Development and Flood Mitigation Committee chairman Law Choo Kiang for arranging with the Drainage and Irrigation Department (DID) to build a rubble stone wall, measuring 3m high and 20m long, to strengthen the riverbank.
Law and some DID officers inspected the riverbank on Tuesday.
The wall is expected to be completed by next week.
