FOURTY–five-year-old mother of one and career woman, Datuk Norashikin Ismail, beat several top-notch personnel from leading multinational companies to be presented with the coveted Malaysian Institute of Human Resources Management’s (MIHRM) HR Leader of the Year 2011 award recently.
In a brief interview with StarMetro after the award presentation at a leading hotel in Petaling Jaya recently, she attributed her win to her lifelong commitment to workers’ welfare.
“They are my foremost concern when it comes to work and I do everything in my capacity to make them a valuable asset to the organisation,” she said.
After clocking years of service with multinational companies Norashikin opted to bring her vast experience to a local company.
She joined Maju Group of Companies in 2008 as its group human resources director, after leaving Emerson in 2008 as the senior human resources manager, where she spent four year.
With more than 20 years of experience in human resources that began with a British multinational company, she made history when she joined Sony and broke Japanese tradition as the first lady to be promoted to lead a division.
Subsequently, she continued her career in Emerson, a leading American oil and gas solutions provider, where she took up the role as HR Leader.
Her portfolio covered HR functions for the Asia-Pacific region.
Norashikin, who graduated at the top of her class from the University of Nebraska, United States, holds a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration, majoring in Management and Management Information System.
A recipient of the Public Service Department full scholarship, she excelled academically, gaining admission into the Dean’s List and Golden Key National Honour Society, USA.
She marked another significant achievement when she was awarded the top Malaysian student in the College of Business Administration.
She was also notable as an active and enthusiastic participant in promoting Malaysia in many international events during her college years.
Asked what made her give up an illustrious career in multinational companies for a local outfit, Norashikin said it was gratitude.
“This country gave me a chance to pursue my tertiary education with the help of a government scholarship and I felt it was time I helped a local company with my vast experience.”
Maju Group also grabbed a Gold in the HR Breakthrough Award category.
Human Resources Minister Datuk Seri Dr. S. Subramaniam presented the awards at the dinner-cum-award presentation night.
Among the award recipients in the individual category were Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Effendi Norwawi of Encorp, Datuk Sunathi Alicia Nathan of Masterskill, Kenneth Ho of IBM Malaysia, Raja Ahmad Hidzir of Kumpulan Perangsang Selangor and Andrea Chua of KPMG.
They received gold and silver awards in the HR Leader of the Year 2011 category.
And among the winning companies are Dell Global Business, Puncak Niaga, Universiti Tenaga Nasional, Citibank, Standard Chartered Bank, Grand Dorsett Subang Hotel and IBM Malaysia.
Over 60 companies vied for the awards, organised by MIHRM in partnership with JobStreet.com.
