Four Taiwanese songstresses treated concert-goers to a memorable night of melodious tunes at Genting Highlands recently.
Themed Divas 4: Songbirds of Taiwan, the concert held at Arena of Stars saw Chyi Yu, Winnie Hsin, Michelle Pan and Shunza complementing each other with their distinctive vocals and charisma.
There was hardly a dull moment at the concert for each segment was strung together seamlessly.
The opening act, a lively rendition of Mamma Mia followed by a cheeky L-O-V-E, warmed up the crowd before each of them took over the stage individually.
Chyi, who exuded a stately aura, presented the audience with Stories and Huan Yan (Smiling Face).
“I look forward to be here every time to see my good friends (referring to her die-hard fans). I love to sing and you love to listen; you are my kindred souls,” she said.
The crowd applauded enthusiastically as she crooned Olive Tree, with Vincent van Gogh’s olive trees paintings projected on the stage backdrop.
Everyone knew the lyrics by heart and had no problem singing along when Chyi gestured them to. Their efforts were rewarded by a thumbs-up from Chyi.
Before Pan took over the stage for her segment, Shunza prepared the crowd with the melody of Pan’s Tian Tian Tian Lan (Blue Skies) behind a grand piano.
A graceful Pan, who sported blunt-cut bangs and wavy tresses, then followed through with a medley of Tian Tian Tian Lan and Tian Kong (The Sky).
Her evergreen numbers Ye Bai He Ye You Chun Tian (There’s Spring in the Savage Lily Too) and Wo Shi Bu Shi Ni Zui Ai De Ren (Am I The One You Love The Most) struck a chord with the audience.
The solo performances were interspersed with beautiful duets and theme songs of TV series and movies, transporting the audience back to the yesteryears.
Snippets from the TV series and movies were shown when Chyi belted out Fei Niao Yu Yu (Flying Bird and Fish, theme song of Flower of Women) and Ni Shi Wo Suo You De Hui Yi (You are All My Memories of The Lake Edge Will Be Chilly This Year), Pan Ji Du Xi Yang Hong (After Many Red Sunsets, series of the same title) and Gui Hua Xiang (Sweet Olive Alley, series of the same title), and Hsin Lia Lia Xiang Wang (Gazing at Each Other of Heaven Sword and Dragon Sabre) and Titanic’s My Heart Will Go On.
Shunza, on the other hand, presented Over the Rainbow of The Wizard of Oz, a movie she loved as a kid when she first moved to Los Angeles in the United States.
The popularity of the four songstresses were proven with the audience singing along to most of the songs performed.
Shunza, who is the youngest of four, peppered the show with her playful antics.
She pranced around the stage throughout the night and responded to her fans’ shouts with a fly kiss.
There was no doubt about her singing prowess as she belted out her hits, Hui Jia (Come Home) and Xie Yi Shou Ge (Write A Song).
“My command of Chinese was poor when I started my singing career in Taiwan.
“The producer asked if I could write songs in Mandarin and I was only familiar with ‘hui jia’, which is ‘come home’, hence the song was written,” she explained.
Hsin, who was most well-known for her Ling Wu (Realisation), Wei Dao (The Scent) and Nu Ren He Ku Wei Nan Nu Ren (Women Shouldn’t Be Hard on Women) did not disappoint her fans.
She wowed the crowd with the soulful renditions of the numbers and even choked with emotions and held back tears as she was about to belt out the last line of Ling Wu.
“I have been singing this song for years and each time I am overwhelmed with different feelings.
“The song is not just speaking about love and relationships but also about life. I hope it will touch your souls,” Hsin said.
A resounding encore brought the four divas back onto the stage for Yue Liang Dai Biao Wo De Xin (The Moon Represents My Heart) and Guang Yin De Gu Shi (The Story of Time), before the two-and-a-half-hours concert drew to an end.
