THE Seberang Prai Municipal Council (MPSP) is upgrading the Bukit Mertajam public market at a cost of RM517,779.
Its president Maimunah Mohd Sharif said the job involved three scopes — enhancement of the market costing RM163,259, installing individual water supply to stalls (RM192,000) and electrical re-wiring (RM162,520).
She said that apart from the Bukit Mertajam market, the council was also currently upgrading four other public markets in the municipality at a total cost about RM1.075mil.
The markets are located at Sri Rambai, Seberang Jaya, Penanti and Sama Gagah.
Maimunah said the upgrading work at the Bukit Mertajam market, which is more 40 years old, started in August and was being done in stages.
“I am here to see the work in progress and to find out if there are any issues that need to be addressed,” she told reporters when visiting the market recently.
Also present were MPSP secretary Rozali Mohamud and councillor Oon Neow Aun.
Maimunah said repainting of the market and repairs of its toilets had been completed while the remaining works were expected to be completed in November.
MPSP assistant engineer Azmi Abu Hasan, who is supervising the project, said there was delay in completing the works due to many factors, including the weather.
“We only carry out the works after the market is closed so that we do not disturb the business of the traders,” he said.
