MALAYSIA won the team gold on the final day of the IBSA World Tenpin Bowling championships at the Sunway Pyramid Megalanes recently.
The foursome of Azri Pinang, Muhamad Suhaili Abd Hamid, Choo Kam Chan and Jason Soo were not ranked among the favourites. But the quartet rose to the occasion and accumulated 2,769 pins to finish ahead of South Korea and Japan with 2,649 and 2,566 respectively.
For Jason, it was his second gold medal in the five-day competition. His first was on the opening day in the TPB3 singles. He also won a bronze in the All-Events.
Malaysian team manager Dzulkarnain Sapian said their team meeting the night before did the trick.
“The bowlers had been a little nervous the whole week.
“We told them to go for broke on the final day and the team had each other’s support to carry them along.
“They responded and showed tremendous spirit and did well. Everything else followed and the South Korea were trailing us. This is a great performance and they deserve all the praise for rising to the occasion,” said Dzulkarnain.
It was an impressive outing for the Malaysians. They had a haul of two gold and four bronze medals in the championships.
Meanwhile, South Korea were the overall champions with six gold, eight silver and four bronze medals.
South Korea’s coach Lee Sang-won said that winning was not everything.
“We had come here to do our best. We lost out to Malaysia in the team event, but they bowled well.
“Besides, in the team event, both form and luck play a part. Both deserted us. But we are not disappointed with the silver because we lost to a better team for the day,’’ said Sang-won.
