SOUNDS of thundering drums reverberated throughout the auditorium of Wisma Bentley Music in Mutiara Damansara. No, this wasn’t a drum troupe but a two-man band.
American drummer Johnny Rabb was in town to conduct a special drum workshop on the Roland V-Drums and a nifty new sampler pad called the SPD-SX.
He was accompanied by his bassist, Clay Parnell, who collectively make up the duo called BioDiesel.
The full-house audience were treated to the fourth dimension of drumming which involves creative mixes of sounds and impromptu composition.
In the crowd were also 15 children from the drum studio of the StART Society who were given the best view in the hall from their VIP seats, and later an exclusive autograph and photo session with Rabb.
The event was organised by Roland Asia Pacific Sdn Bhd, the sole distributor for Roland, Boss, Edirol and Cakewalk products in Malaysia and Singapore.
Roland AP has not only been a staunch supporter of the local music scene but also for the music advancement of underprivileged children.
In fact, they recently sponsored the use of their top range instruments at the recent I Believe charity concert, which received much praise and acclaim.
The show started with a song off their newly released CD, Two-One-Live.
Their music was a mixture of house and experimental electronic music.
Rabb showcased the sounds of the Roland TD-20X electronic drum kit together with the SPD-30 percussion pad and the new SPD-SX sampler pad.
It was made apparent that with this minimal setup, they could sound like a full band with many instruments.
He showcased many different sounds from the drum kit alone combined with triggering effect samples and loops from the SPD-SX too.
A couple of people from the audience got to ask their drum hero some questions on drumming techniques and Rabb was more than happy to share his knowledge with the audience.
Many drummers who were present wanted to know his single-hand buzz roll technique.
It was an entertaining affair as Rabb and Parnell kept the show going with their brand of house music and humorous stage antics.
When they got into an impromptu jam, the crowd was only too pleased to clap along.
Shows like these are part of Roland Asia Pacific’s marketing campaign to bring more awareness on the benefits of electronic drums to the masses and also to have special artists to impart some knowledge to the public and children from the StART Society on playing techniques and equipment.
The company also had another show featuring a brilliant British guitarist, Alex Hutchings to showcase some of the Boss brand guitar effects and more.
