MORE than RM100,000 was collected in a recent fundraising dinner hosted by the Leng Eng Tian temple in Sungai Way, Petaling Jaya.
The 38-year-old temple, currently located in Jalan SS9A/4, will soon be relocated to a larger space just two kilometres away next year.
In 2001, the Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) conducted a census on the squatters occupying the area near the temple, including the Tenaga Nasional Bhd land.
The council then advised the developer to relocate the squatters and to find a new spot for the temple before developing the area.
“We are grateful to be awarded the piece of land by Taipan Focus Sdn Bhd as it is not very far from our existing location, hence devotees living nearby are still able to visit us,” said temple chairman Yap Yit Leong.
Yap added that construction work at the new site had begun and at present some 70% of it had been completed.
“The finishing touches and interior works will take a longer time as each area around the temple is special and has very detailed artwork on them,” he said.
He said construction works had escalated from RM3mil to RM4mil as most of the materials used were imported from China, including its craftsmen.
An auction was held at the dinner which saw guests bidding for items which had been blessed by the temple’s monks.
A token of appreciation was handed to over a hundred donors who contributed to the fundraising effort.
At present Yap said the temple had collected RM1.8mil and would be holding more charity events to help meet its target in the next few months.
