TWO veteran state representatives from different sides of the political divide faced off in a battle of wills when both accused each other of being rude.
State Assembly Speaker Datuk Abdul Halim Hussein eventually cracked the whip after Phee Boon Poh (DAP—Sungai Puyu) and Datuk Arif Shah Omar Shah (BN—Seberang Jaya) got into a shouting match inside the House.
“Please stop shouting at each other in the House and don’t use the word biadab (rude). It is not nice,” Abdul Halim said.
Earlier during the oral question session, Arif Shah said Wong Hon Wai (DAP—Air Itam) should not simply halau (chase out) tenants of public housing projects who breached the tenancy’s terms and conditions.
A red-faced Phee immediately interjected, repeatedly demanding that Arif Shah retracted the word halau.
The latter refused, after asking Phee to sit down.
“(If you want me to sit down) say sila (please),” Arif Shah retorted, before retracting the offending word.
The two, who stood out at the state assembly because of their snow-white hair, then accused each other of being rude.
At last year’s November state assembly sitting, Arif Shah locked horns with Phee when the former told the latter not to keep disrupting his speech.
Arif had quipped: “We are both pek mor (white hair), so don’t kacau (disturb) me, please.”
Phee was the lone DAP representative in the state assembly from 1990 to 1995.
The former Bagan Jermal assemblyman was the sole Opposition representative then while Arif Shah was in the ruling party.
