Reps take shuttle bus to attend state assembly

TWO DAP assemblymen made heads turn when they arrived at the state legislative assembly hall on a Central Area Transit (CAT) city shuttle bus from Komtar.

Both Padang Kota assemblyman Chow Kon Yeow and Pengkalan Kota Lau Keng Ee were all smiles after alighting from the bus.

Chow said the move was a symbolic call to promote greater use of public transportation.

“We are sending out a message here which is to reduce the dependence on private vehicles.

“Road congestion and illegal parking remain a problem. It took us 35 minutes, instead of 20 minutes, to reach here from Komtar,” he said when met at the bus stop outside the state assembly hall on Light Street yesterday.

Chow said the state had seen an increase of 120% in private vehicle registration over the last 10 years, from 416,893 to 919,167 in 2011.

“This presents a long term challenge for us, with congestion problems bound to become major issues.

“We have to change the unhealthy trend as Penang, in moving towards achieving the status of a modern state, will not compromise on the standard of living,” he said.
