THE Rural and Regional Development Ministry has spent RM3.4mil since 2009 to repair and built houses for the poor and hardcore poor in the south Seberang Prai district.

Sungai Acheh assemblyman Datuk Mahmud Zakaria said 56 new houses costing RM33,000 each were built while 450 houses were repaired for RM11,000 each.

“Concerned about the needy, the federal government has helped them by building new houses and repairing existing ones,” Mahmud told reporters after a walkabout in his constituency.

The allocation by the Ministry to build and repair the houses was given through the Rubber Industry Smallholders Development Authority (Risda).

The walkabout was organised by the Penang Regional Development Authority (Perda) along with his service centre and Risda.

The recipients were from Permatang Keling, Sungai Star Besar, Sungai Acheh, Jalan Sempadan, and Kampung Besar, all from Nibong Tebal.

Mahmud also called on the family of a house in Sungai Chenaam which was repaired by Risda for RM11,000.

He said Perda allocated RM300,000 to help purchase equipment and machinery for some 60 hardcore poor families in the state.

Single mother Hasmah Yusof, 64, from Kampung Permatang Keling said she was very happy that she would be receiving coconut scraping machine, sealing machine and cooking utensil worth RM4,030 from Perda.
