Last-minute Deepavali shopping

WITH Deepavali just around the corner, people are hustling to the streets of Little India in Ipoh to do last-minute shopping.

It was a busy and lively place even on a weekday as vehicles traversed in and out of the avenue.

The streets were a burst of colours with rows of beautiful sarees and Punjabi suits on display alongside decorations and Deepavali delights.

Choices galore: Surendar (left) showing a Bombay cotton top to Harpreet (right) while shopping at Little India Ipoh while store owner Inder looks on.

Housewife Surendar Kaur, 50, was among the many men and women shopping for new clothes at Little India on Thursday.

“I came to Ipoh to visit my family and I am delighted to be able to do my shopping with them here,” the Klang resident told MetroPerak while browsing for clothes with her sister-in-law Jasbir Kaur and niece Harpreet Kaur.

“We are hoping to find some new kurti,” said Jasbir.

Libaas Fashion owner Inder Singh, 64, who has been running his store at Little India for 30 years, said there were fewer customers this year compared to previous years.

“It is probably due to the fact that it is the examination period now.

All decked out: Store owner S. Susiladevi, 50, displaying decorations neatly in front of her store.

“The rain has also affected business although I think more people will be visiting Little India in the last three days leading up to the celebration,” he said.

Despite the rain, the annual dance performances at Little India was still a crowd puller, he added.

Restaurant owner Charnjit Kaur, 53, said business was slightly slower than usual, citing the exams and rain as the reasons for it.

S. Rani, 52, who sells decorations, lighting and prayer paraphernalia, was hopeful that the crowd would build up soon.
