WITH 22 rapids ranging from Grade II to IV, Sg Kampar in Perak is the popular choice for most whitewater enthusiasts. A two-hour drive from Kuala Lumpur will take visitors from concrete urban jungle to tranquil villages set amidst rubber trees, fruit orchards and dense thickets.
The upper stretches of the river start with a series of fun drop-and-pool cascades cloaked by lush forest while the lower section opens up to the spectacle of Perak’s stunning limestone outcrops and quaint villages.
“After spending more than 20 years paddling whitewater rivers in Malaysia, I did the first kayak descent of Sg Kampar, and immediately knew there was something special about this river,” says Chan Yuen Li of Nomad Adventure, an adventure outfitter.
“It’s the perfect trip for beginner to intermediate paddlers because it has enough challenge to keep everyone excited minus the hazards. Advanced paddlers get to practice their playboating skills with the river’s great surfing waves and nice drops. The river is also close to the Ulu Geroh Rafflesia trail, a haven for Rafflesia and the Rajah Brooke’s Birdwing butterfly,” Chan says.
The Gopeng area is gradually attracting more adrenaline junkies with its other attractions like caving, high ropes course, rock climbing, waterfall abseils and jungle treks.
