Best mountain trek

What say you on the issue below?

IF mountains were women, Sabah’s Mount Kinabalu would be the undisputed grande dame of Malaysia’s peaks. No matter how many times you have scaled Kinabalu, you will still be awed by the majesty of its granite massif.

At 4,095m and towering over other all peaks in Malaysia, Kinabalu is relatively easy to climb for fit but inexperienced trekkers. With 14 notable peaks on the Eastern and Western plateaus, the jaw-dropping view from the top is worth the huffing and puffing. Check out the world’s highest via-ferrata too whilst you are up there.

“If you insist that I pick the best mountain treks in Malaysia, I would have to say the five highest: Mt Kinabalu, Mt Trusmadi, Mt Tambuyukon, Mt Mulu and Mt Murud,” says Penang-based outdoor buff Ahmad Nadir.

Hear, hear! Up to the early 90s, these mountains, with the exception of Kinabalu, saw few visitors.

From the peak, Sabah’s Trusmadi (2,642m) boasts one of the most spectacular sights. One of the most underrated mountains in Malaysia, Tambuyukon (2,579m) also sees the fewest visitors – an average of just 100 visitors a year, as Sabah Parks issue limited permits.

Catch a 360° view of endless miles of green mountain ranges: Kalimantan’s Apo Duat Range and the Tama Abu Range from the peak of Sarawak’s highest mountain, Mt Murud (2,423m). The gruelling climb on Mt Mulu’s (2,367m) sheer walls will certainly build character.

Topping out at more than 2,000m, the peaks resemble enchanted gardens of fairy tales. Stunted and gnarled trees with elaborate, claw-like branches look right out of a Chinese ink brush painting, while gourd-shaped pitcher plants looking like Aladdin lamps decorate along the trails.

If you can’t stand crowds, these are the peaks to scale!
