TEENAGER Ariana Muralidharan edged the other hopefuls to emerge as the most outstanding tennis talent at the recent Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) Junior Sports Award in Kelana Jaya recently.

It was a stiff contest with a strong field of a total of 17 nominees from tennis in contention for the top performer award.

Despite earning the recognition for her talent, Ariana asked her teammate Jayeswary Agiladeswaran to share the limelight by receiving the award on her behalf as she could not attend the ceremony due to other commitments.

It was a fruitful month for Ariana in tasting personal glory as she had also chalked up respectable performances in the girls’ Under-16 category of the Genting-Selangor International Junior Open Champion-ships at the end of November.

All sports under the council’s sports initiatives at grassroots except for basketball nominated their candidates.

The selection panel also picked promising athletes from nine other sports — athletics, badminton, cycling, football, futsal, hockey, netball, sepak takraw and squash — for the third edition of the biennial affair.

For their respective feats, each winner received RM500 from Petaling Jaya mayor Datuk Mohamad Roslan Sakiman.

Roslan said the council introduced their junior development programmes starting from 1990.

“Currently, we have been allocating RM1mil for sporting activities annually.

“For each year, we set aside more than a third of the budget excluding sponsors’ contributions for junior programmes.

“It is important to encourage the youngsters to scale greater heights through a proper grooming process,” he added.

Having won the Selangor inter-district Games for seven consecutive years, Petaling Jaya is aiming to continue maintaining their good run and protect their top position in the overall standings.
