Amazing science woos the young

What say you on the issue below?

Hands on experience: Students checking out the robots on display at the fair.

INTEREST in science and technology is strong among students, as evident in the good turnout at the inaugural Penang International Science Fair.

The one-day fair, which was held at the Penang International Sports Arena (PISA), attracted more than 5,000 visitors within three hours of opening.

Organised by the Penang Science Council in collaboration with Pergalakan Program Sains and Teknologi (PPST), the science fair was also backed by industry players such as Intel, Motorola Solutions, Agilent, B. Braun and Mini Circuits.

Some 3,000 students, aged between seven and 17, had earlier registered online to take part in various activities such as constructing robots, building and launching water rockets, moon watching and building light-emitting diodes.

Teachers, parents, academics and industry leaders joined them in what has been described as the first science fair in Penang specially catered for students.

There were also talks and exhibitions conducted by universities, schools and Malaysian Invention and Design Society (MINDS).

Various electronic companies in Penang also showcased their technology and science behind their products.

Engineer Ng Han Siong 37, was seen among the crowd with his wife Ooi Chan Pheng, 30 and three-year-old son Ng Hern Jing during the fair.

He said his son managed to enjoy the fair despite his tender age, adding that the hands on experience was good exposure for children.

He hoped that future science fairs would be held longer instead of just one day so that more people could visit.

The event was officiated by Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng who hoped that the fair would inspire the young to become future engineers and scientists.

He later attended the Penang Development Corporations’ Family Day in Bayan Baru where he announced a one-month year-end bonus for its employees.
