CIMB-YFA became the overall champions for the third straight season in the Datuk Chu Ah Nge International Junior football tournament at the Royal Selangor Club (RSC) in Bukit Kiara, Kuala Lumpur recently.

CIMB-YFA had the most number of points in the five age group — Under-8, Under-10, Under-12, Under-14 and Under-16 — competition. They were champions in the Under-8 age group after a 2-0 win over Bintang Biru in the final.

They were third in the Under-10, Under-12 and Under-16. As the overall champions for three straight seasons, CIMB-YFA will keep the challenge trophy.

CIMB-YFA chief coach N. Radhakrishnan said they had every reason to be elated with their results in the competition.

“The competition is unique. Every participating team must be represented in all five age groups. The presence of foreign teams also made the competition an interesting and exciting affair.

“Becoming the overall champions for the third time in a row is certainly an achievement for us,’’ said Radhakrishnan.

The competition was an initiative by the RSC Junior Soccer Develop-ment Programme.

Ah Nge had proposed the competition as a platform for juniors to display their skills.

Overjoyed: The CIMB-YFA players celebrating after winning the Datuk Chu Ah Nge challenge trophy.

He said the main objective of the tournament was to provide competitive football for kids from the various clubs and academies.

“But we were keen to only have clubs or academies with a comprehensive junior development programmes. We are convinced that the competition has become a catalyst for the development of football academies in Malaysia,’’ said Ah Nge.

From a modest eight teams in the inaugural competition in 2005, the number of teams had increased to 14 this year. Besides established football clubs and academies in Malaysia, the competition attracted teams from Singapore, India and Indonesia.

Organising committee member J.B. Buddilal said they restricted the competition to well organised clubs or academies.

“We have seen an improvement in the quality of the competition. Some of the players, who started in the Under-8 age group, are now playing in the older age groups. They have shown excellent progress and as the organisers we are very pleased,’’ said Buddilal.

The highlight of the tournament was the final between Little League and JSSL Arsenal Singapore in the Under-10 age group.

The players from both sides showed a lot of commitment during the final.

With support from parents, JSSL Arsenal Singapore scored a convincing 3-0 win over their rivals.

JSSL Arsenal Singapore’s Nidhish Narula was named as the Man of the Match (final) while teammate Tommy Lamb was the top scorer.
