30 poor children take part in ice hockey session

THE Malaysian Ice Hockey Federation (MIHF) and their partners brought cheer to about 30 children when they organised a ice hockey session at the Pyramid Ice rink recently.

MIHF secretary Susan Loh said the three-hour programme was part of their annual charity and community programme in conjunction with the Christmas.

“We have been organising events, with a charity element, every year. This year we wanted to give a chance to children to be involved in ice hockey activities.

“We had invited the children through the Hulu Langat District Welfare department. The children are from poor families and are not able to experience ice hockey,’’ said Susan.

The MIHF had support from KL Cobras, Dexion Asia and KL Wildcats. A group of 12 volunteers from Dexion Asia were also present to assist in the programme.

Dexion Asia executive general manager Stuart Macnab said they were supportive of MIHF community programmes.

“We have been part of the ice hockey league for almost five years. The MIHF have set a good example by initiating this programme.

“It is good to see the children having a good time on ice. The children were well behaved. The MIHF should be praised for organising this meaningful event for the children. I am also happy to see my staff being part of the programme.

“We will continue to support the MIHF in their programmes,’’ said Macnab.

Internationals Gary Tan and Haniff Mahmood were also present to guide the children, who were provided with ice hockey attire and equipment.

Gary said the children were brave and willing to try the sport.

“Of course it was quite tiring for me but I was encouraged by their enthusiasm. Our aim is to bring joy to the children and we have succeeded in that,’’ said Gary.

Later, the children were treated to lunch and were given presents which included shoes, calculators and dictionaries.

Welfare officer Noor Adelin Nordin, who was present, said they appreciated the MIHF’s efforts.

Graduate M. Janaththan, who is a project co-ordinator with the Educational, Welfare and Research Foundation Kajang, said the children come from the lower income group.

“We organise education and recreation programme for them.

“The ice hockey session will be a memorable one for them,’’ said Janaththan.
