CANCER patients often feel alone and discouraged when battling the disease but there are support centres which will help them get through the dark times.

One of them is the Mitta for Life Cancer Counselling Centre in Penang which had been carrying out community services actively since it was formed in 2005.

Mitta started as a free counselling service for cancer but had grown to provide a multitude of free caring services and charitable activities which include weekly counselling service and bi-monthly breast examination.

Mitta also provides reiki relaxation therapy (only for those suffering from cancer and arthritis) twice a week, and conducts monthly health talks, an annual health exhibition, health awareness campaigns and weekly tai chi classes.

Founded by Mahindarama Buddhist Temple chief priest Venerable E. Indaratana Maha Thera, the centre is open to everyone regardless of race, religion or creed.

Centre chairperson Dr Jeyashree Srinivasan said that the number of people attending the counselling sessions at the centre had increased over the years.

“In the centre, everyone is equal and we aim to help one another,” she said.

Dr Jeyashree said that among the most sought after service was the reiki treatment which is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing.

The centre holds different activities every Saturday. These include the reiki sessions, free breast examinations, needlework craft, recipe sharing, cooking demonstration and laughing therapy.

“Everyone, regardless of what illness they are suffering from, are welcome to join in the activities here,” Dr Jeyashree said.
