Renown expert conducts workshop on survival skills

What say you on the issue below?

PUT foreign currencies in a bag in your house to stop robbers from ransacking the whole house.

This is because robbers would grab whatever they deem valuable to them, said safety activist K. Balasupramaniam in a recent workshop to teach women on city survival skills.

“You should even consider putting bottles of perfume that you seldom use, inside the bag.

Safety talk: Balasupramaniam delivering his talk on survival skills.

“When they have got their hands on something valuable, they will not ransack your home,” he said.

Balasupramaniam, who is fondly known as Captain Bala, noted that crime usually took place when the perpetrators had the opportunity and time.

“Each household should invest in a loud hailer to scare off would-be perpetrators.

“The sound from it will also alert your neighbours that an intruder is in your home, or trying to get inside,” he suggested.

“Besides being able to ward off criminals, it can also be used to scream at your spouse,” he joked to the delight of 200 women who attended the half-day workshop entitled “Survival is a Dying Act” organised by the Milap Club.

Precautionary measures: Participants of the workshop buying items to better protect themselves.

“To avoid becoming victims of road bully, do not curse or show your anger at the other driver,” he said.

Instead, one should smile at the person while muttering to themselves whatever they were unhappy about, he said.

“At least, we get it out of our system,” he added.

Topics covered by Capt Bala ranged from safety at home to personal safety and ways to detect hidden cameras in hotel rooms and toilets.

Event organiser and club president Dr Harbinder Kaur Gill said the workshop was aimed at raising awareness among womenfolk.

“We are doing this to protect ourselves, in response to the stories we read daily about rape, kidnapping and robbery in newspapers,” she said.
