KUANTAN: Some 200 primary school children participate in the longest dragon run in an attempt to set a record for the Malaysia Book of Records here recently.
The pupils from 13 schools were flagged off by Deputy Tourism Minister Datuk Dr James Dawos Mamit in a 1.5km race to the top of the temple at Jalan Sungai Lembing.
At the temple grounds, they entered the longest man-made dragon in the world through its tail.
The run through the interior of the 823m-long dragon ended when the participants emerged from the mouth to be greeted by statues of Taoist deities at the temple plaza.
Dr James said the dragon monument was certainly the most unique attraction at the temple.
“This is the first time I have come across such a structure,” he said.
Dr James added that the temple should not only be promoted as a place of worship, but as an urban tourism spot as it is located in a forested area.
“Visitors who come here need not necessarily be devotees.
“They can also experience and learn about environmental conservation in an urban area,” he said.
Dr James also urged the local authorities and Tourism Malaysia Pahang to cooperate in promoting the temple in line with the Local Agenda 21’s principle of sustainable development.
Also present at the event were temple founder Kui Wai Pong, Tourism Malaysia Pahang director Amran Abdul Rahman and Semambu assemblyman Datuk Pang Tsu Ming.
The run was organised by the Kuantan Municipal Council, Tourism Ministry andAlfa Impact Organising Sdn Bhd in conjunction with the World Children’s Day.
