LITTLE India may soon be turned into a pedestrian mall as part of the state government’s plan to revitalise the area, said state Local Government and Traffic Management Committee chairman Chow Kon Yeow.
“I am sure that there would be some resistance but I hope that the traders would eventually co-operate with us.
“The roads in Little India have been upgraded and are better suited for a pedestrian mall,” he said.
Chow added that the idea had been suggested to the Penang Malaysian Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PMICCI) and they would work together with the state to make it a reality.
PMICCI president N. Vasantharajan said he was going to meet with the traders to pitch the idea to them, adding that they needed to be convinced as many of them were resistant to change.
Chow was speaking to reporters on Penang Street at a free medical camp organised by the PMICCI.
Vasantharajan said traders also sent their foreign workers here for check-ups to ensure that they were in good health.
