SHELL Malaysia, in collaboration with Shell in nine other cities across Europe and Asia, welcomed 3,243 drivers to set a Guinness World Record for the Largest Fuel Efficiency Lesson.

The Malaysian leg of the event was held in Kuala Lumpur and brought together 1,225 participants for the training session, making it the biggest number globally across 10 cities from nine countries.

Organised to mark Global Shell FuelSave Day, the worldwide celebration included simultaneous training sessions for motorists to learn how to be more fuel efficient, save fuel and cut driving costs. Aside from Kuala Lumpur, the lessons were staged in Allerød, Denmark; Bangkok, Thailand; Hamburg, Germany; Hong Kong, China; Istanbul, Turkey; London, UK; Manila and IloiIo City, the Philippines; and Valkenburg, Netherlands.

The world record attempt was overseen by Guinness and a team of local adjudicators. The successful setting of a new Guinness World Record was officially announced at 7pm.

In Malaysia, the event was held at 1Utama Shopping Centre and saw a host of games and food and beverage booths adding to the carnival-like atmosphere.

The Global Shell FuelSave Day was attended by Shell Malaysia Trading Sdn Bhd and Shell Timur Sdn Bhd managing director Azman Ismail, who was accompanied by Shell FuelSave Ambassador Fahrin Ahmad, and the first ever Shell FuelSave Team Malaysia — three drivers recruited from across the country to help inspire other motorists to be more fuel efficient.

Shell Malaysia also organised the 2011 Shell FuelSave College Competition. The competition tasked private college students to plan and execute a communications campaign to promote fuel efficiency amongst their college mates, as part of the lead-up to the Global Shell FuelSave Day.

HELP University College was announced as the 2011 Shell FuelSave college champion, winning RM10,000 and a trophy. Coming in second and receiving RM5,000 and a plaque was Tunku Abdul Rahman College.

“To see so many people come together and set a Guinness World Record was fantastic. We know that motorists all over Malaysia are looking at ways to cut their driving costs, so I hope that through today’s celebration, we’ve been able to show them how easy this can be.

“By using the right fuel for your vehicle, you will be able to impact the level of fuel efficiency and thus stretch your ringgit further,” Azman said.

During Global Shell FuelSave Day, visitors were also treated to performances by Ning Baizura, One in a Million 2006 winner Suki Low, Freeloaders Inc, Diplomat of Drums and Roosevelt.
