JOHOR BARU: In an effort to encourage schools to add more books to their libraries, the organisers of an upcoming Chinese books expo will be distributing RM200 discount vouchers to schools throughout the state.

The event’s organising chairman Ho Muh Jke said that the book vouchers would be distributed to 25 Chinese primary schools and eight independent schools, while Southern College would receive a RM500 voucher.

“The initiative is so that schools will have no excuses not to add new books to their libraries. At the same time, we are instilling a reading culture among the younger generation,” Ho told reporters at a press conference here.

Great offers: Promoters displaying the banners and buntings for the expo.

Ho added that there would be about half a million books available at the first and largest Chinese book expo in the state that is scheduled to be held at KSL City shopping mall from Nov 4 until Nov 13.

He said that readers will be spoilt for choice as the 204 booths from 70 exhibitors will offer books starting from RM2 and at discounted prices of up to 90%.

“Besides featuring local publishers and authors, we will also be bringing in books by authors from China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and other Southeast Asian countries.

“Visitors can also enjoy book signings, talks and activities,” he said, adding that about 200,000 visitors are expected to attend the book fair.

Ho also said that, to encourage people to buy more books, visitors who “Like” the expo’s Facebook page are eligible for a 30% discount voucher.

State Tourism and Domestic Trade committee chairman Hoo Seong Chang, who also attended the press conference, said that the expo would attract both domestic and foreign tourists to the state.

“I hope that book fairs like this can be organised in other districts like Kluang, Batu Pahat and Muar so that those staying in rural areas can also have a chance to visit the fair,” he said.
