HUA HIN: MCA top leaders can only represent the party if they remain a united force, Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said.

The Prime Minister said he was pleased that his advice to the top MCA leaders to resolve the party leadership tussle quickly has been accepted.

“I advised the two leaders (Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat and Datuk Seri Chua Soi Lek) and their vice-presidents to find a quick solution. It looks like they have listened to my advice,” he told Malaysian journalists after attending the East Asia Summit in this Thai city yesterday.

Najib was asked to comment on the two leaders’ decision to put aside their differences and work as a team in the interest of the party.

“They need to resolve their problems because no one team commands the majority. No one group has more than 50% support based on the EGM results.

“Whether they like it or not, they have to abide and accept the fact that until and unless they are united, they will not be able to represent the whole party,” Najib added.

In Putrajaya, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Muhyiddin Yassin said the sooner the MCA resolved its crisis, the better it would be for the party and the Barisan Nasional.

“I agree with the Prime Minister. It is in our interest to see the MCA become united and resolve its differences which the leaders are already trying to do.

“The party has to take the interest of the community at large into account and not just of individuals within the party,” he told reporters after attending the finals and prize giving ceremony of the RHB-The Star Mighty Minds 2009 competition here yesterday.

Muhyiddin said the MCA leaders had indicated that they were serious in resolving their differences and to make the party stronger.

On Dr Chua lodging a report with Registrar of Societies (ROS) to have him reinstated as deputy president, Muhyiddin said the ROS would act according to what was provided in the law and the MCA constitution.
