Residents say bird cage has turned into an eyesore

What say you on the issue below?

RESIDENTS of Bandar Baru Selayang are asking questions about an abandoned bird cage built by the Selayang Municipal Council (MPS) and want it turned into a community hall instead.

The enclosure, which is about the size of a badminton court, was abandoned about four years ago.

Dangerous: The cage is also a breeding ground for mosquitoes.

According to Dataran Templer B Rukun Tetangga committee member Jalani Omar, 47, the cage is an eyesore, especially since it is located about 50m from the MPS building.

Jalani suggested that instead of leaving the cage to rot, the MPS should demolish it and build a community hall at the site to benefit the community.

“We are in dire need of a community hall where we could have meetings and organise functions with the residents,” Jalani said.

RT Dataran Templer B chairman Md Nordin Awang Mat said the RT had discussed building a community hall at the site with the Gombak Land Office and had sent an application in the RAs name.

According to MPS public relations director Mohd Zin Masoad, the bird cage project was a failure as there were no volunteers willing to take care of the birds.

“We had about 50 birds in the cage to beautify the place but have given them all to Zoo Negara. Next year, we will demolish the cage and turn it into a park or recreational area.

“We will look into residents’ suggestions for a community hall and decide on it at the committee meetings,” he said.
