GRAVE digger Zul Zelan Bakar knew something was not right when he saw signs of fresh digging at a Muslim cemetery in Jelutong, Ayer Keroh, in Malacca, reported Harian Metro.
Curious, he dug up the area and was shocked to discover a foetus with its umbilical cord still intact, buried in a shallow hole.
The foetus was wrapped in a white cloth and plastic, and was buried in the 10.16cm hole between a potato patch and another grave.
There was no headstone to mark the site, probably an effort by those responsible to avoid suspicion.
Police who arrived at the scene after a report was made, suspected that the foetus was that of an unmarried woman.
> The daily also reported about a man whose dream of getting married was dashed after he was not allowed to register his marriage at the Pontian district registrar.
Ali Bakar, 23, who claimed to be Chinese and practises Buddhism, was barred from doing so as he was listed as a Muslim on his MyKad. Ali, also known as Ah Tee, said he was a Buddhist since birth.
“I am a Chinese, not a Malay, even though my name is Ali Bakar,” he added.
Ali explained that his father was a Malay, named Bakar Dolah, but his mother was a Chinese named Suki.
He claimed that although his mother had converted to Islam to marry his father, she continued to practise Buddhism, as were all his siblings.
According to Ali, his elder sister had a Chinese name, which is Ah Ni, and had no problems registering her marriage.
Nevertheless, the rest of his siblings have Malay names - Lan, 25, Hamid, 21, and Rani, 15.
When Bakar passed away, Suki had wanted to bury him in a non-Muslim burial ground but was stopped by the Johor Religious Department. He was buried at a Muslim burial ground in Johor Baru.
