PETALING JAYA: The future of the MCA will be determined today at the extraordinary general meeting (EGM) which has been the talk of the town.
Party delegates will decide on who is the better man to lead the party – MCA president Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat or suspended deputy president Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek.
The political showdown will either plunge the MCA deeper into crisis or restore stability to the party so it can deliver the support of the Chinese community.
A total of 2,380 delegates are entitled to vote on five resolutions and an almost 100% turnout is expected given the gravity of the situation.
The EGM will be a no-frills event. There will be no speeches and voting will begin at 10.30am.
Results are expected by 2pm.
Dr Chua will not be able to attend or vote because he is officially under a four-year suspension.
The run-up to the EGM has taken place against the backdrop of morality that ranged from the DVD of Dr Chua’s scandalous sex escapade in a hotel room and Ong’s good governance crusade in connection with the PKFZ fiasco.
There are four possible scenarios in today’s EGM.
> Ong comes out on tops with the no-confidence vote against him rejected and Dr Chua’s sacking stays
> The no-confidence vote against Ong is carried and Dr Chua is reinstated as No 2
> Original status quo with no-confidence vote against Ong rejected and Dr Chua reinstated as No 2
> Both men are shown the door with the no-confidence vote against Ong being carried and Dr Chua’s sacking reaffirmed in a scenario being pushed by the so-called third force in the party
The proposed resolutions:
> That the members of the general assembly have no confidence in the leadership of Ong;
> That the presidential council’s decision on Aug 26 in accepting the recommendation of the disciplinary board and the subsequent decision of the central committee (if any) to expel or suspend Dr Chua is annulled;
> That Dr Chua be rightfully restored as MCA deputy president;
> That any appointment made by the central committee, including that of the deputy president of MCA, be revoked; and
> That there shall be no disciplinary action taken against any or all of the requisitionists by the disciplinary board, the central committee or the presidential council.
