SANDAKAN: Twenty-eight people were made homeless when their wooden houses in an oil palm plantation here were razed.
No casualties were reported in the 10am blaze yesterday at the Sungai Manila land development scheme, some 25km from Sandakan town. The victims comprised seven men, eight women and 13 children.
Sandakan Fire and Rescue Services officer in charge Mohd Razali Awang Ahmad said firemen were sent to the location after receiving a distress call but the homes were destroyed by the time they arrived at 10.25am.
Meanwhile, a pile of rubbish discarded on the top floor of a building near 3rd mile Jalan Utara caught fire at about 11.20am yesterday, sending frightened residents fleeing to the street below.
Members of the public prevented the fire from spreading before firemen arrived at the scene.
