BACHOK: In a bid to avoid crashing into several cars, the driver of an express bus swerved his vehicle and rammed into two shophouses in Kampung Pak Badol here.

The 11.30am mishap saw the bus almost mowing down Mariam Abdullah, whose restaurant is housed in one of the shophouses.

Her husband Mohd Razali Che Ali, 62, said yesterday’s incident wrecked the restaurant and a car that was parked nearby.

A refrigerator and cooking equipment were also damaged. Nevertheless, Mohd Razali was relieved that his 40-year-old wife was unhurt.

“We are unsure what we are going to do next. The incident has left us without a source of income.

“We do not know when the restaurant business will resume.

“I will negotiate with the bus company for compensation to rebuild my shophouse,” Mohd Razali said.

He estimated his losses at RM40,000.

Bachok police chief DSP Yahya Salleh said the bus driver had been detained to facilitate investigations.
