PUTRAJAYA: Umno will complete cleaning up its membership list within a a year, party vice-president Datuk Seri Shafie Apdal said.
Shafie, who heads the committee in charge of cleaning up the list and structuring efforts to increase loyalty among its members, said Umno wanted to identify members who were dead, were inactive or moved out from areas where they had registered.
He said the existence of the names of such members led to miscalculations by the party in calculating its chances of victory in elections or by-elections.
“We (the committee) have met three times already and we are drafting the approach to use before it is presented to the Umno supreme council for approval.
“It will take some time as we need to look at why some members have become inactive and ways to attract more members. I am confident this will be completed within a year,” he told a press conference after attending the Universiti Kuala Lumpur convocation here yesterday.
Shafie also said that once the list was cleaned up, Umno would go on a membership drive to attract more professionals and youths into the party.
