PORT DICKSON: A policeman was injured when he was hit on the head while trying to break up a fight between Barisan Nasional and PAS supporters near SK Si Rusa, near here.
Negri Sembilan police chief Datuk Osman Salleh was also at the scene and was pushed by some men in the 6.30pm incident yesterday, but he was not injured.
Osman said Lans Kpl Faizal Mohd Zin was driving him back to the police headquarters after visiting polling centres in Sua Betong when they saw the two groups in a fight.
They stopped the car to intervene.
“While trying to break up the fight, Faizal was hit. He was sent to the Port Dickson Hospital,” Osman said when met at the scene.
However, he said Kpl Faizal’s injury was not serious.
Osman said he could not identify the individuals who hit his driver, but believed they had no intention to hurt Kpl Faizal.
“However, we will look at the tape recordings of the incident to identify them,” he added.
Earlier, Home Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein said party supporters have been told to observe rules and regulations and not create trouble when the voters go to the polls today.
He said the Government had agreed with the Election Commission’s decision to bar vote canvassers and party supporters from gathering at polling stations.
Hishammuddin said would keep a close watch on the situation to avoid problems that could threaten public peace and order.
“The authorities will ensure that constituents can cast their votes and go about their daily lives in peace,” he said after attending a Hari Raya gathering organised by Rela.
