TAKING into account the encouraging response from the public on the temporary police beats in crime hotspots in Selangor, steps would be taken to expand the service nationwide.
Deputy Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Ismail Omar made the announcement recently following a visit to a police beat base in Section 7, Bandar Baru Bangi.
“Setting up temporary police beat bases have proved successful and has increased the public’s confidence in the police and their own safety,” adding that he had received good feedback from the public on the initiative.
He said the initiative which started two months ago in hotspots in the state would continue indefinitely but declined to reveal the date by when it would be fully implemented nationwide.
It is believed that the other places identified as hot spots are Kuala Lumpur, Johor and Penang, as well as about 50 other smaller places nationwide.
Ismail urged the public who had witnessed a crime taking place to report to the the temporary police beats immediately.
“Quick tip-offs by the public can allow our officers to deploy policemen quickly to the area, increasing our chances of nabbing the culprits,” he said.
It is learnt that there are 10 crime hot spots in Selangor with over 20 temporary police beats placed in these locations.
The beats will be manned by two officers at any one time, 24 hours a day.
It is also learnt the temporary police beat bases would be relocated to other locations within a hotspot if the need arises.
