KUALA LUMPUR: PAS will not call for an extraordinary general meeting (EGM) as proposed by its spiritual leader Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat but will instead convene a special meeting to discuss issues related to the party, said its vice-president Salahuddin Ayub.
He said the issue of PAS calling for an EGM no longer arose as Nik Aziz himself had agreed that the party holds a special meeting. Salahuddin said that Nik Aziz conveyed the matter to him when they met at the Kelantan Mentri Besar’s house in Kota Baru on Saturday.
“It does not arise anymore. I met the Tok Guru and listened to his views on the party. PAS will convene a special meeting soon,” he said.
Meanwhile, academician Assoc Prof Dr Ahmad Nidzamuddin Sulaiman said if the EGM was to go ahead, it could cause disunity among the Malays.
The senior Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia political science lecturer said if the move to cleanse the party of problematic leaders was held, it could give rise to the emergence of a new political party.
“This will cause disunity among the Malays and will also split supporters of the party,” he said.
