Rock singer implicated in nightspot brawl

GEORGE TOWN: A popular rock singer-cum-actor and his entourage have been identified as the ones responsible for the assault of a businessman at a nightspot in Penang Road here.

Penang police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Wira Ayub Yaakob said the 41-year-old Kuala Lumpur-based singer and his friends would be called up soon to facilitate investigations into the brawl which occurred in July last year.

“The victim, in his 30s, managed to recognise one of his attackers as the singer. It is still unclear what triggered the attack but the motive could be due to a misunderstanding between both parties.

“We have classified the case as rioting under Section 147 of the Penal Code. Those found guilty can be jailed up to two years, fined, or both,” he said yesterday.

The singer, who has starred in many local movies, is no stranger to controversy. He was once engaged to a well-known actress but the wedding was called off due to his alleged infidelity.

He started his music career in Kuala Lumpur in 1989, fronting a popular rock band before pursuing a solo career. He has since rejoined the band after it regrouped.
