PETALING JAYA: Malaysians of every race and religion must be concerned about the suffering others are going through, said Buddhist Maha Vihara chief high priest K. Sri Dhammaratana.
Appealing to the public to contribute and help the victims of the Padang earthquake, he said the victims would appreciate it further if they could physically go there to lend a hand.
Dhammaratana, founder and adviser of the Ti-Ratana Welfare Society, was at Menara Star here yesterday to donate RM5,000 to the CIMB-The Star Padang Relief Fund. He was accompanied by 10 children from the welfare home.
“We just celebrated our 12th anniversary and managed to raise some funds. It is a nice thing to share the funds with the less fortunate.
“A small contribution can go a long way, especially for children,” he said.
Meanwhile in Bangi, Indonesian students from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia hoped their donations to the Padang earthquake victims would go to areas that have yet to receive any aid.
UKM Indonesian Student Asso- ciation secretary Pramudita Lestari said there was a lot of help available in Padang itself.
“But there are other areas that have not received anything,” she said after presenting donations totalling RM1,120 to the CIMB-The Star Padang Relief Fund.
The money was collected over the past week from Indonesian students studying in the university. It was banked into the account at the CIMB branch on campus.
The association also placed donation boxes at Indonesian restaurants at Hentian Kajang. Pramudita said T-shirts would also be sold to raise funds.
A second year international business student, she said the donation drive would be an ongoing effort as they were also working with other Indonesian student associations from other colleges and universities.
