EMKAY-NPNG became the new Super Division champions of the Football Association of Selangor (FAS) League when they scored a convincing 4-0 win against PKNS Sports and Recreation Club in the final at the Petaling Jaya Stadium in Kelana Jaya recently.
An own goal in the 35th minute gave Emkay-NPNG a slim 1-0 lead in the first half.
But Emkay-NPNG, with several seasoned players on their side, had to wait until the 71st minute for their second goal through M. Thiruventan, while K. Sivabalan and S. Paidiya Rau scored in the 78th and 80th minutes respectively for the win.
However, the big scoreline did not reflect the intense and gutsy display by PKNS. They had the chances but could not make them count.
The win also showed Emkay-NPNG’s dominance in the FAS League. Last year, they won the Division One and FA Cup crowns. This season, Emkay-NPNG defended the FA Cup before winning the Super Division.
Emkay-NPNG coach Michael Palani said the match could have gone either way.
“PKNS gave us a tough time. In fact, they had the upper hand in the early stages of the game. A mistake by their defenders led to us taking the lead.
“After that they tried their best but we gained control. Our players should be praised for capitalising on PKNS’ mistakes to get more goals,’’ said Michael.
As the champions, Emkay-NPNG will represent the FAS in the FAM Cup.
However, Michael said they had not made any decision on that yet.
“The team management will have to sit down and look at the prospects before making a decision on playing in the FAM Cup.
“We have played in the FAM Cup before. But now the situation is different and it is premature to make a comment until the management meets,’’ said Michael.
Emkay-NPNG will also reward the players and officials with a trip to Langkawi.
