Past winners of Raja Muda regatta set to return

What say you on the issue below?

NEW ZEALAND’S Neil Pryde, a four-time champion, is among the former winners taking part in the Raja Muda Selangor International Regatta (RMSIR) starting in Port Klang on Nov 14.

The other former winners joining the eight-day competition are Ray Roberts, Nick Burns and Fred Kinmonth.

In a jovial setting: Nah (third left), who is also the RSYC Commodore with the other organising committee members.

The RMSIR, the longest-running keel boat regatta in Malaysia, will end in Pulau Langkawi on Nov 21.

About 60 yachts and 400 sailors would be involved in the RMSIR, organised by the Royal Selangor Yacht Club (RSYC), and being held for the 20th year.

Race director John Ferguson said RSYC would be represented by 20 yachts.

“The RSYC organises a series of yacht races throughout the year and sailors are both local and foreign.

All set to sail: A filepic of Neil Pryde, 66 (third left) and some of his Hi-Fi Team Pryde members.

“For this year’s competition, sailors are coming from Britain, Hong Kong, Australia and Asean countries,’’ said Ferguson.

The keel boats are divided into seven classes — IRC 1 (racing yachts), IRC (premier cruising), IRC 3 (fast racing over 40 feet), IRC 4 (fast racing below 40 feet), non-IRC cruising (any yacht without IRC racing), non-IRC classic (any yachts built before 1979 to a classic design) and OMR multi-hull (any yacht with two or more hulls also named catamaran).

Organising chairman Datuk Alex Nah said that the RSYC was active in the promotion of sailing to children especially in the optimist dinghies.
