No need to turn on the computer

What say you on the issue below?

It was just a few months ago when I wrote about how social networking has taken our world by storm, the fact that now every Tom, Dick and Harry has either an account on a particular social network or, like most trend followers, owns several active accounts in various networks and are practically hooked onto the Internet 24-7.

Well, trends have evolved again. Going online to access your Facebook or Twitter from your PC is so yesteryear. Ditch the desktop because the world has now gone mobile.

Think of PSP (Play Station Portable), handy laptops, smaller yet convenient netbooks, camera phones, mobile games, Itouch, and many other mobile applications that connect you to the Net straight from your own palm. You don’t even need to turn on the computer!

I just downloaded my TweetDeck (a software platform that allows you to receive and provide updates from a few popular social networks) the other day and realised that the application has an Iphone version, too, which means I can synchronise with an Itouch and get connected to the Internet wherever there’s wifi, mind you, that’s almost everywhere nowadays.

I could be eating Sarawak Laksa in the jungle and “twit” (with photo) about the delicious meal from my phone. Almost instantly, everyone who reads my blog, friends in Facebook and followers in Twitter will know I’m slurping laksa in some God forsaken place.

Not into camera phones: The writer with her trusty camera

And it’s not just social network and fancy mobile applications that are taking our dwindling attention of the real world away; mobile games, movies and music play a vital role, too. Take my brother for example; he leeches on his PSP these days like his life depends on it. He’s so addicted to his RPG games on that machine that even when he’s watching TV, he’s playing the game!

But who am I to judge? Instead of books and the good old symphony of crickets at night, my ears would be plugged to music while I struggle with “Diner Dash” and “Airport Mania” (Apple games on Iphone) on my Itouch during some of the evenings of my travels.

Even movies on these little contraptions have replaced the tradition of music and a good read on long bus rides between states or countries. Two two-hour movies and a nap can make a nine-hour ride feels like a walk in the park. And I can update the world from my mobile phones what movies I’m watching too!

At least I have yet to give in to camera phones. I still have my trusty Canon 500D to count on everywhere I go. Though I have seen a fair share of friends and strangers whipping out their phones whenever a moment needs capturing.
