MBPJ to rate contractors pruning trees

THE Petaling Jaya City Council has plans to implement a rating system for contractors who prune trees in the city.

“Petaling Jaya residents really take pride in their surroundings. We get complaints when the trees are not pruned properly in their area,” said mayor Datuk Mohamad Roslan Sakiman during the closing ceremony of the Tree Maintenance Workshop at Menara MBPJ recently.

Twenty employees from the 10 contractors appointed by MBPJ to prune trees attended the workshop to learn the proper techniques of maintaining trees.

The workshop was conducted by UPM urban forestry lecturer Amat Ramsa Yaman.

Roslan said that under the system, residents and MBPJ officers would rate the contractors based on their services and how well they pruned the trees.

“Some of the contractors are not doing it the right way and end up causing damage to the trees,” said Roslan.

He added that contractors who have attended courses would also be given priority to be appointed.

“Singapore has such a system and it seems to be effective. We hope to start it next year,” he said.

In line with the council’s efforts to make Petaling Jaya a green city with one tree to every resident, Roslan said that they would be writing to the other agencies to clean up and maintain such places like river reserves, railway reserves and highway road shoulders.

“We will ask them to maintain these areas and improve on the landscaping as there is potential to green these places. We will form a committee to handle this,” he said.
