FT Ministry all set for challenge

What say you on the issue below?

THE Federal Territories Ministry may have a new name and a wider work scope, but its ministers are not daunted by the task ahead and are determined to rise to the challenge and deliver.

Federal Territories Minister Datuk Raja Nong Chik Raja Zainal Abidin pledged to do his best to address the problem.

“I will carry out the responsibilities entrusted to me as best as possible and will ensure the programmes are carried out smoothly and effectively.”

At the budget meeting on Friday, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak had said the role of the Federal Territories Ministry will be broadened.

It will now be known as Federal Territories and Urban Wellbeing Ministry and its main responsibilities will include preparing a comprehensive action plan and implementing programmes to address urban poverty.

A total of RM48mil will be allocated for urban poverty eradication programmes, including providing of welfare assistance and house rental payment.

Deputy Minister Datuk M. Saravanan said the ministry’s role would be strengthened and expanded to eradicate urban poverty nationwide.

“It is not an easy job but I am ready to take on the challenge and see how we can best find ways to help thepeople,” Saravanan said.

He said urbanisation could not be reversed and with growing urbanisation in many parts of Malaysia, there was a need to ensure that good quality and better equipped public housing projects are built for the poor.

“Everyone deserves to have a home that they can call their own and this is why, in the case of the Kampung Pandan Indian Settlement, I am determined to see that the residents will one day own houses,’’ he said.

Kampung Pandan Indian Settlement has been earmarked for redevelopment. The 200-odd residents currently living there have been told to relocate by the end of October.

The development project involves the building of 480 low-cost units. Each unit will measure 700sq ft which is 50sq ft bigger than the other public housing units in the city and will be more modern.

It will have two 15-storey blocks and is estimated to cost RM47mil.

“I will be meeting with the residents soon to explain the relocation and their future.

“Many of these residents are still in the dark and are not aware of many things,” he said.

Saravanan advised residents to think carefully about what they want as it concerns not only their future but the future of their children.
