SANDAKAN: A trader was shot dead by two masked men in a robbery at an oil palm plantation in Kinabatangan about 100kms from here.
The robbers opened fire at the trader’s four-wheel-drive vehicle, killing him instantly.
They then grabbed a bag containing money believed to be workers’ payroll before fleeing in the 2.30pm incident at Ladang Lee Pang two days ago.
Kinabatangan police chief Deputy Supt Jaini Abdul Kadir said yesterday that three others, including a 10-year-old child inside the car, were unhurt in the incident along a narrow road at the plantation.
“The two masked men emerged from behind some trees and fired three shots at the moving vehicle. Two shots hit the door and a third shot hit the victim in the neck.
The vehicle came to a halt with the victim slumped over the steering wheel.
“The two robbers then opened the door and grabbed the cash before fleeing,” Jaini said.
The three passengers were not harmed, he said, adding that they were yet to ascertain how much money was taken.
Jaini said the victim operated a sundry shop in the plantation and assisted the workers in cashing their pay cheques at banks in Sandakan, as Kinabatangan did not have any banking facilities.
A Kinabatangan police team assisted by officers from Kepayan state police headquarters remains at the plantation conducting operations to trace the suspects.
